Addi's World

I let Addi play with my little point and shoot camera and before I knew it the batteries were dead. I found out why when I charged the batteries and loaded the pictures there were probably close to 100 pictures.

I thought they were very interesting though (the ones I could make out that is) to see how the world looks through her eyes.

Dance Class

Addi started her dance class last week. She loves it...of course.
She likes to come home and pretend to be the teacher and I
must pretend to be 'vicky' the naughty girl in the class so she can
repremand me.

A Song to Brighten Your Day

This guy is pretty sweet. I stole this from my friend Megan's blog I thought it was so cool. She said I'd listen to at least 3 more of his songs on youtube and I did. Listen to the whole song, it's great.

Creamy Zucchini Soup

Fall is here well at least it's here, here in New England and it's time for hot bowls of steamy soup. This one is REALLY good!

1 1/2 lb zucchini, cut into 1/2 inch pieces
1 1/2 cups canned chicken broth or water (broth is better)
1 small onion chopped
1 clove garlic chopped

1/4 cup whipping cream (substitute half and half, whole milk, or milk for less calories)
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1 tablespoon Parmesan

On medium high heat sautee onion and garlic in a little oil, add zucchini and broth and bring to a boil, reduce heat to medium low, cover and let simmer until zucchini is tender (about 15 min.).

Working in batches, puree soup in blender until almost smooth. Return soup to same saucepan. Add cream, nutmeg and cheese; stir over medium heat until warm. Season with salt and pepper

P to the POAG

We went camping this last weekend at Ponkapoag with a bunch of friends.
We are not campers but this is our second camping trip this summer and I think
we're getting better at it...if not warming up to it!

Addi and Hazel gathering kindling, in one of their harmonious moments.
We have decided that Addi and Hazel like to fight, it's part of their friendship,
they find the tiniest things to fight about just so they can have an argument.
We are trying to encourage them to be friendlier friends....we'll see how it goes.

Charlie is Randall's little buddy, I think Randall likes it to have
a little manly companionship.

Off to gather sticks.

It was surprisingly chilly so everyone was glad for the hot chocolate
Special shout-out to our new 5 gallon thermos that kept the water hot overnight!

GAMES KID'S PLAY

duck, duck, goose was a hit! they played for hours
thanks to our new friend G for making the game more exiting
by making up new 'ducks' and 'geese' such as Picasso and avocado

Daddy taught Addi to play horse shoes

Of course we could not go camping with out fishing (Addi's new favorite thing)
Unfortunately the fish weren't biting but one of the Dads caught a turtle!

Dress-up

Addi's good friend Hazel had a spectacular "Fairy Tale" birthday party.
Addi dressed up as Cinderella, she thought she was so beautiful she needed a photo shoot.

P.S. Thanks Hazel for a great party, we've been fighting witches and dragons ever since.

Independent Play...A Felony

I let Addi watch an unusual amount of TV this morning so I sent her out in our completely and securely fenced backyard to play while I sewed the elastic straps on her tap shoes (a 5 min. task). Addi immediately started crying because she wanted me to play with her, I told her I would come out in 5 min. but that she could go ahead and start playing.

[aside: Theo was asleep and I was planning on leaving the back door open so I could hear him if he woke up]

She then continued to cry now saying that she had to go to the bathroom. I came to the door and took her in to the bathroom, when she was done I took her back out and pointed out that there were electrical workers in the tree in our neighbor's yard and that it might be fun to watch what they were doing. She did not see the fun in that but I went and finished the tap shoes when she started saying she was scared, I asked her (through the window) what was scary and she pointed to a brown spot on the paint. At this point the door bell rings.

I run through the house to answer the door and there is a Police Woman standing there (I recognized her as the Police person that was with the workers (in Massachusetts almost all out door or road projects must have a police officer on site-tax dollars at work). This is how our conversation went:

PW: how old is the girl in the back yard
A: almost 4
PW: there are other forms of abuse than hitting your kids.
A: she is not abused
PW: she has been crying out there for 15 min.
A: it wasn't 15 min.
PW: it was at least 15 min.
A: did you time it?
PW: no
A: So you don't know...did you see me take her in to use the bathroom?
PW: no.
A: did you see me talking to her at the window...I was reassuring her
PW:no, but you can't lock your child outside
A: the door was not locked she can open it (Addi had already opened it by this point and was now standing by me)
PW: you can not leave a child outside unsupervised.
A: She was not unsupervised I was talking to her and I could hear her
PW: You don't know if she was crying because she was hurt
A: our yard is safe, it is completely fenced and locked no one can get in or out. (also, I didn't say this but any mother worth her salt can tell if HER child is in pain or just crying)
PW: But you weren't watching her.
A: So if I'm listening to my child on a baby monitor they are unsupervised because I cannot see them?

She did not answer this question but went ahead and threatened to call DSS and Medford PD (she is a trooper) saying that she was a "certified reporter" and I couldn't stand up to anyone with authority and convince them I wasn't doing something wrong.

I told her that her accusations were unfounded and she finally "compromised" and said that it doesn't look good to neighbors and passers by to hear a child crying and that someone would probably call the police or DSS on me.

Here are my thoughts:

-If I were a police person and heard the cry of child I would probably go check it out too. I hope I wouldn't be so aggressive and condemning.

-I have had 3 encounters with Massachusetts Police and they have all been terrible. I AM NOT A FELON...they are all, aparently, on the loose!

-It came up in the conversation that she was a mother and I was wondering if day care counts as "unsupervised" because she can't see her kids, she's just hoping someone else can.

-The irony kills me because I am truly concerned with children in dangerous and abusive situations and they are often in my prayers.

-I hope she doesn't turn me in...it would just be a hassle and a waste.

Tar Beach

Our neighbors have lovingly named the backyard pool Tar Beach because the back yard is mosly concrete and asphalt. The up-side is that you don't have to worry about the pool killing the grass.

It was sweltering this week and with Theo sick we couldn't go far...so Tar Beach was perfect!

Madeline

Addi's favorite book lately is Madeline. She has it memorized and can read every page to you.
She likes you to mess up when you read it so she can correct you.
Aunt Ashley sent Addi her (Ashley's) old Madeline doll and Addi was (is) thrilled!
Here she is reading Madeline to Madeline.
Favorite quotes from the book:
"Something is not right"
"pooh-pooh"

Thanks Ash!

Butato

Addi gets confused between tomatoes and potatoes so she just decided to call them both butatoes.

This is my first ripe tomato.
I only have one planter box and I think the squash is taking up all of the root space so the tomatoes are slow in coming.

Holding Hands

On one of our many walks last week Addi and Theo were not getting along very well.
I was trying to teach Addi how to be an example and to be patient with Theo.
After a while I noticed there was no more squeeking and struggling and when I looked down I saw this.
Kids...I don't think we give them enough credit.
